Restoring ecological function to saline–sodic soils in South Dakota with perennial grass mixtures

چکیده
Revegetation of saline–sodic soils is challenging. Over 10 million hectares are intertwined with highly productive in the Northern Great Plains, 3.4 ha South Dakota. Establishing salt-tolerant perennial plants provides soil cover and remediates barren areas. Two grass mixes [Mix 1: slender wheatgrass (Elymus trachycaulus [Link] Gould ex Shinners) + beardless wildrye (Leymus triticoides [Buckley] Pilg.); Mix 2: creeping foxtail (Alopercurus arundinaceus Poir.) western (Pascopyrum smithii [Rydb.] Á. Löve) ‘AC Saltlander’ green hoffmannii K.B. Jensen & K.H. Asay)] were dormant-planted 2018 2019 along a catena high [electrical conductivity (EC1:1) = 0.39 dS m–l; 72 mg kg–1 Na+], moderate (EC1:1 1.64 343 Na+), low 3.87 1,680 Na+) productivity zones. Vegetative biomass was measured after seeding (2018, 2019) during growth (2020, 2021), compared areas seeded to maize (Zea mays L.) nonplanted area. Biomass varied year zone. Except 2018, grasses had greater zones than maize. The sodium content 2020 2021 10× (0.25 vs. 0.02%, respectively) but could be suitable for livestock feed. By 2021, similar both all zones, spread into

development in this state. Q & A agrees with Mistry that two major “push” factors that are making producers in his part of Europe look elsewhere are tough environmental laws and limited agricultural land that is costly and increasingly hard to find. “There’s no doubt that the environmental laws in northern Europe are a lot tighter than they are here,” says Van der Sluis. “It’s almost impossible...

Livestock producers and processors who deal in beef cattle, hogs, sheep, and poultry are also finding South Dakota to be an excellent location for processing plants and large-scale livestock operations. All this, makes for some general public concerns as residents in communities around the state try to chart a course that will allow for farm development while protecting the environment and deal...
متن کاملEstablishment, Growth, and Yield Potential of the Perennial Grass Miscanthus × Giganteus on Degraded Coal Mine Soils
Miscanthus × giganteus is a giant C4 grass native to Asia. Unlike most C4 species, it is relatively cold tolerant due to adaptations across a wide range of altitudes. These grasses are characterized by high productivity and low input requirements, making them excellent candidates for bioenergy feedstock production. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential for growing Miscanthus on...

T problem of the extent to which the children of aged, needy persons should contribute to their support has been a persistent one in the administration of public assistance since the days of the Elizabethan poor law and even earlier. In recent years this problem has acquired a new urgency because of the mounting cost of old-age assistance. The response to the problem has varied considerably amo...
متن کاملA new emphasis on root traits for perennial grass and legume varieties with environmental and ecological benefits
Grasslands cover a significant proportion of the agricultural land within the UK and across the EU, providing a relatively cheap source of feed for ruminants and supporting the production of meat, wool and milk from grazing animals. Delivering efficient animal production from grassland systems has traditionally been the primary focus of grassland-based research. But there is increasing recognit...
